Car-to-car or vehicle-to-vehicle communication
is a developing wireless technology that will create a prevention system that
projects cars positions, speeds, brake status, etc. to other vehicles nearby.
It signifies an oncoming car with visual, audio, and physical notifications
which a driver cannot ignore. This product is beginning to be tested in Europe
and Japan, and as they are improving this system, vehicles should have a larger
broadcasting distance that will help prevent collisions all together.
An aspect that should be emphasized
in this article is how the driver is being alerted of an oncoming vehicle. By
having a visual light, an audio beeping, and a physical buzzing in car seats,
it is impossible for a driver to ignore the warning signals of an oncoming car.
These signals are targeting the driver’s senses in order to notify them that
another car is coming from a blind spot. By listening to these signals and
acting with the appropriate responses, this technology can prevent oncoming
collisions that would occur when another car comes from an obstructed view. Another
important explanation in the article is how the cars are able to be detected
and share their signals. They are using radar or ultrasound technology to
detect obstacles and vehicles in the area. Another article identifies an
alternative, that the position and data from each car is being sent to the
cloud, which ultimately allows the cars and other digital signals to exchange
information from sensors to notify a driver when another car is close by. The development
of this technology is creating a safety net for drivers and pedestrians. Similarly,
to the idea of automatic breaking, the car will notify the driver when imminent
danger is approaching, this could change the drivers route, and they will be
out of harms way. The article also states that over “five million crashes occur
on US roads alone every year,” which could be severely reduced with the use of
this technology. The advancement of this technology will help reduce the amount
of accidents on US roads, which could help insurance and car companies in the
future. Once this is fully developed, all cars can be built with this
technology and the rate of accidents could reduce severely.
However, this
article did overlook how the data would be transmitted without interfering with
other sensors and detectors already in place, as well as how often this data
will be updated. This article also lacks the distance of the radar, and how far
in advance the car will notify the driver of an oncoming obstacle. It is
important that the technology be tested and revealed to the public, but it
should also work with the current modifications on cars. Companies should also
look at the comparison of cars that reduce speed as a way to determine the best
use for the technology. Nonetheless, the use of this technology will benefit
society greatly, and will hopefully end the risk of fatal accidents altogether.
Car-to-car communication seems like it is a very important new technology because it has the power to save a lot of lives from car crashes. I like how this technology sends a signal to three important senses because it gives the driver a better chance of being aware of the danger before it is too late. One thing that needs to be closer looked at is how this data is being transmitted. If it is through a cloud then there needs to be extra security precautions because clouds can be hacked and that cannot happen when human lives are at stake. Another thing that concerns me is if people become too dependent on this. People need to know how to still detect danger for themselves just in case something malfunctions with this technology. The last aspect is the price. If this new system costs too much people are going to be less likely to purchase it. It also should be known if this is something people can add onto the cars they already have or if this technology needs to be built into the car. If the latter is the case it could take years before every person uses this new technology.
